Tiger is a 9 year old Percheron/Paint cross from Montana, and Buster is an elderly Virginia Thoroughbred, who I've known since I was in high school. They both live at Over Pope's Head Farm in Clifton, Va. I sent Tiger to my best friend Carol after her favorite old horse died in 2002. This way we stay connected, and the months when I'm in Virginia I still get to ride Tiger.

This was my best horse ever. "Ronhorse" was a registered QH who would jump anything put in front of him. I evented him, competed in hunter trials and pace events, showed him in hunters and jumpers all over Northern Virginia. Because of him I'll always be partial to grays.
Betsey Hurd ~ Artist
The strength of my work comes from depicting what I know best---horses and livestock and the natural world. Whether in clay or bronze sculpture or paintings, I use a lot of texture and gestural movement---I’m more into the feel and essence of things than the little details, though composition and correct conformation are always important.
I’m interested in the secret lives of animals, their own relationships without humans (even though life is meaningless without a horse). Even as a child, I could spend hours sitting in the pasture just watching what was going on there (it also helps to be easily entertained!) We have three draft cross mares now, and I try to ride at least two of them everyday, and then take the experience back to the studio with me---or just haul an easel out to the pasture.
I split my year between Spring and Fall in Clifton, Virginia, and Summer and Winter in Kalispell, Montana.
